A $4.9 billion joint venture between Stellantis and LG Energy Solution will build Canada’s first lithium-ion electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturing facility in Windsor, Ont., according to federal and provincial authorities on Wednesday.

“This is the largest automotive investment in the history of our province and the country as well,” said Ontario Premier Doug Ford.

“This game-changing battery plant will help guarantee that Ontario is at the forefront of the electric vehicle revolution and ensure we remain a global leader in the auto manufacturing just as we have been for over 100 years.”

Each level of government is offering incentives for the project, which is expected to produce over 2,500 jobs in the area.

According to the two companies, there are “executed binding, definitive agreements” in place to establish the plant, set for a 45-gigawatt-hour annual production capacity for the project.

Mark Stewart, Stellantis chief operating officer said “This battery plant is going to supply across North America for us as one of two that we have envisioned,” he also stated that Windsor is a good location for business due to its close proximity to the United States border.

In the coming weeks, Stellantis plans to reveal the location of another EV battery manufacturing plant, this one being in the United States.

“This will put us on the map, not just here in North America, but globally,” said the president and chief executive officer of the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce, Rakesh Naidu.

“There’ll be a recognition of what Windsor-Essex can do in terms of not just how good we are in the conventional auto sector, but also in terms of the new generation of auto technologies, and the new EVs sector.”
