With millions of dollars invested by the provincial and federal governments, Edmonton could soon be home to the biggest hydrogen plant in the world.

The project, which is expected to cost $1.6 billion to develop by Air Products Canada, will have the capacity of producing 100,000 tonnes of hydrogen a year.

An estimated 2500 jobs will be created during the construction, with an additional 30 positions after the project is fully operating.

During an interview on Tuesday, François-Philippe Champagne, Canada’s Innovation, Science and Industry Minister, stated that this funding reflects the confidence of international corporations in Canada’s workforce and infrastructure.

“My dream is that Alberta, western Canada, becomes the hub of hydrogen in the world that people look at when it comes to clean technology, when it comes to production, when it comes to use of hydrogen,” said Champagne.

The government of Canada is providing $300 million towards the development of the project to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the industry.

The Alberta government has offered Air Products a $161.5 million fund over the course of three years from the Alberta Petrochemicals Incentive Program once the plant begins operations, which is expected for 2024.

“There’s been something quite dramatic taking place in Alberta recently, as we recognize the important role hydrogen has to play in achieving clean, secure renewable energy into the future,” said Energy Minister Peter Guthrie.
