Heavy rains over the course of two days in British Columbia’s westernmost province caused massive flooding and mudslides, closing roads and rail lines going in and out of Vancouver.
Enbridge Inc. confirmed on Tuesday that the company had temporarily shut down a section of one of its two Westcoast natural gas pipelines in British Columbia due to the flooding happening in the province.
With a 30-inch-diameter line and a 36-inch line, Enbridge’s Westcoast pipeline can deliver 1.5 billion cubic feet of gas per day (bcf/d) to the lower mainland of British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest, respectively.
The 30-inch pipeline in the Coquihalla river valley was shut down Tuesday morning, according to an Enbridge spokesman. As of this writing, the 36-inch pipeline is still running.
Customers can still expect Enbridge to deliver 1.4 billion cubic feet per day, despite part of the pipeline being closed.
“We are continuing to monitor the situation and will take further actions should they become necessary,” Enbridge spokesman Jesse Semko said in an email.
For now, there is no date set on when the 30-inch section will return to full service.
