Saskatchewan Introduces Two Sustainable Energy Projects

methane emission

According to the Saskatchewan government, two new renewable energy projects will help both the province’s economy and methane reduction.

The Saskatchewan Emissions Inventory, the first initiative, increases methane modelling and measurement. The Saskatchewan Ministry of Energy and Resources stated that it will use data to create a point-in-time database of emissions information.

Additionally, it will identify major sources of emissions to help to identify cost-effective emission reduction strategies, give detailed reporting, and provide alternatives for zero-flaring.

The second initiative is the Gas Commercialization Mapping (GCM) Service, which identifies locations of high methane concentration and enables the energy sector to plan and coordinate more effectively on large-scale methane capture and commercialization projects, including those with Crown utilities.

According to officials, the GCM service project supports the province’s methane action plan objectives by providing geographic information on areas where methane gas venting and flaring occurs.

“These two initiatives will support Saskatchewan’s already strong record on methane, which includes a reduction in emissions by 50 per cent five years ahead of schedule,” said Energy and Resources Minister Bronwyn Eyre on Monday.

“We continue to ask the federal government to share its emissions data, which is gathered from other jurisdictions, such as Alberta or Texas, and broadly applied to Saskatchewan. These two provincial initiatives will help mitigate the negative impacts of these inaccurate representations.”
