Spring Is Here But Do You Have A Plan?

weed control

Weed control is often a last minute decision. We get it. That said, having an annual weed control and management program in place is vital for oil and gas producers to adhere to their lease commitments.

One of the most compelling arguments for the necessity of vegetation management is that it contributes to forest fire prevention. Due to their rapid spread, long-growing weeds may pose a significant fire hazard. When vegetation comes into contact with electric lines or equipment, fires may develop. These flames may swiftly spread and become very difficult to extinguish. As a consequence, many meters of ground clearance should always be maintained around facilities, as well as electrical equipment that is appropriately isolated from possible fire threats.

To comply with local legislation, it may be required to clear weeds and other vegetation in areas prone to fire. For example, in some areas of British Columbia, residents and businesses are required to clear their property of weeds and brush. As storm intensity and frequency increase, it becomes even more critical to maintain an effective weed management strategy.

Vegetation management is critical in a range of different areas in addition to the oil and gas sector. Railroads are an excellent example. It is vital to maintain control of vegetation around rail lines, roadsides, industrial areas, and forests.

And, given the growing cost of goods and services as a result of record-high inflation, initiating talks on vegetation control early may be prudent. The Alberta Weed Control Act requires the eradication of restricted weeds and the control of noxious weeds. With little vegetation on the property, rodent infestation will be considerably reduced. Absence of vegetation will help prevent snow accumulation while also improving sight and access to facilities and equipment. Furthermore, there are additional SRD instructions on invasive species management in non-agricultural regions.

While the great majority of oil and gas companies maintain their infrastructure, those who do not practise good weed control, according to farmers and ranchers, contribute to contaminating crops and pastures. Well locations continue to act as weed collectors, distributing seeds over fields and raising farmers’ chemical costs. As a result, conflicts have inevitably developed between the oil and gas sector and agricultural growers.

Preemergence weed killers are applied before the emergence of weeds to prevent them from establishing. This does not necessarily mean that the chemicals inhibit germination, but rather that they prevent new root cells from developing in newborn weed plants. Weeds obstruct seedlings’ ability to eat and grow, causing them to wither and perish. This whole process occurs under the earth’s surface so you never have to see the germinated weeds. Pre-emergent formulations and treatment methods are dictated by the time of year, the weather, and the kind of weeds causing issues.

Perennial weeds have strong, persistent adult roots that re-sprout in the spring in order to survive the winter, making them difficult to eliminate using a preemergent combination. Annual weeds are classified as winter annuals or summer annuals. It is critical that the application of a preemergence weed killer coincide with the germination period of the target weed, which makes early Spring a perfect time to begin planning. Herbicides applied prior to the emergence of biennial weeds such as dandelions are ineffective against them because their seed germinates practically continuously throughout the year.
