On Thursday, the United States House of Representatives passed legislation allowing the president to declare an energy emergency, making it illegal for companies to raise gasoline and home fuel prices excessively.
To become law, the bill must be approved by the Senate and signed by President Joe Biden, none of which is likely.
The bill, supported by Democratic Representatives Katie Porter and Kim Schrier, was approved by the House 217 to 207, with no Republicans voting in favour. The bill would need 10 Republicans to get approved in the Senate, which is evenly divided by 50 members in each party.
