A coal mine planned for the Crowsnest Pass in Alberta’s Rocky Mountains is being dropped by Australian company.
In a letter to the Alberta Energy Regulator, Montem Resources requests that the environmental impact assessment for its Tent Mountain proposal be terminated.
According to the letter, the company has no plans to restart mining for metallurgical coal at the location.
The company’s chief executive officer, Peter Doyle, has stated that they will instead be constructing a renewable hydro project there.
Montem and TransAlta signed an agreement in February for the utility to purchase a 50% interest in the project to generate sustainable electricity by combining wind and hydro.
According to Doyle, the renewable energy plan will be fully implemented in 2025.
