For the first time in seven months, mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction in Canada experienced a decrease of 1.8% in November 2021, according to Statistics Canada (StatCan).
Oil and gas extraction dropped 2.5% in November after hitting pre-pandemic levels in October, according to the Canadian Statistics Agency (STA). In November, crude bitumen and synthetic oil output in Alberta declined by 4.3%. Oil and gas extraction (excluding oil sands) increased by 0.1%, despite the decrease in crude oil extraction.
Also, due to flooding in British Columbia, exports from Vancouver marine terminals were interrupted by 17.2% in November, according to the study.
While metal ore production increased and non-metallic mineral production decreased in November, the mining and quarrying industry as a whole declined by 0.2%.
Non-metallic mineral mining, on the other hand, had a 2% increase in the number of mines in Canada, driven by an increase in copper, nickel, lead and zinc mining (+7.0%) and an increase in potash mining (+2.6%).
There was a 2.0% drop in support activities for mining, oil and gas extraction, and drilling services in November, after six months of growth, StatCan reported.
