Germany’s vice-chancellor, Robert Habeck, publicly asked the Canadian government to release an important turbine that is being held up by sanctions against Russia.

Habeck said that the Nord Stream 1 pipeline’s turbine needs to be restored before maintenance work starts on Monday. If the component was released, Russian President Vladimir Putin would have no reason to keep the conduit closed, he told Bloomberg.

“I’ll be the first one who will fight for a further strong EU sanction package, but strong sanctions mean it must hurt and harm Russia and Putin more than it does our economy,” he said on Wednesday. “Therefore, I ask for understanding that we have to take this turbine excuse away from Putin.”

Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Germany is “doing everything to prevent an energy shortage” and wants the turbines to be delivered. “It would be good if they would be there, even though they are not necessary” for the maintenance, said Scholz.
