TC Energy Corp. said it will not revive its Keystone XL (KXL) pipeline project to transport Canadian oil to U.S. refineries, despite calls from politicians in both countries for its resurrection.
As a response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the United States on Tuesday imposed a restriction on Russian oil imports, a move that is expected to intensify global energy market shortages.
“The Keystone XL Pipeline Project was terminated and will not proceed,” said a TC Energy spokesperson.
After years of regulatory delays and severe environmental criticism, the KXL would have delivered 830,000 barrels of Canadian petroleum a day from Alberta to U.S. refineries.
Alberta Premier Jason Kenney called on the United States government on Monday to reevaluate the pipeline, which was suspended last year after President Joe Biden revoked a crucial permit.
While in the United States, opposition Republicans such as former Vice-president, Mike Pence, have also asked for authorization for KXL to continue.
