Minister Sonya Savage and other major oil and gas partners will meet with U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, chair of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, in Alberta to discuss the ongoing concerns about energy security.

During Manchin’s visit, American officials are allegedly urging Canada to expand oil and gas exports in order to fill the hole left by the United States’ complete prohibition on Russian energy imports.

According to Canadian officials, Canada’s oil and gas exports to the United States can be “incrementally increase” by up to 300,000 barrels per day.

However, according to Alberta Premier Jason Kenney, this won’t be enough for the U.S. “Our message to the administration is, help us help you displace a dictator’s oil, not just from Russia, but from OPEC,” he said.

“If we saw a signal from Washington about a willingness to build another major pipeline, the energy companies would respond by investing and expanding their current production.”

The senior West Virginia Democrat Senator, Joe Manchin, has already urged the White House to rethink its decision to cancel the development of the Keystone XL project.

President Biden said last week that the United States would release 1 million barrels of oil per day for six months from its oil reserves, triggering Manchin’s trip to Alberta just over a week later.

Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, a supporter of the Keystone XL pipeline, said the White House will not bring back the project because it does not want to upset Democrats.

“The administration is going to say it is too late because the administration is going to want to save face,” said Cassidy. “Clearly, economy, climate, national security and energy means we should be going with Canada, not with Venezuela or not with Iran.”

The White House, on the other hand, claims that the development of the Keystone XL pipeline will not influence gas prices.
